Most important terms & units for mechanical engineer

mechanical engineer basic term & basic units

Torque- it is the type of twisting force.
Torque=(F)force* r(perpendicular distance from the center of axis)

Couple- A pair of two equal and unlike parallel forces(force equal in magnitude with line of action parallel to each other & acting in opposite directions) is known as couple.

Moment= turning force× distance

Stress- P/A  force/area

Strain- change in length/original length

Spring-like is an element of elastic in which the energy is stored when force is applied and regain its original shape when the load is removed.

Stiffness- it is the property of material to resist the elastic deformation under the action of external load called as stiffness.

Specific weight- it is weight per unit volume of fluid.

Specific volume- it is the volume per unit mass of fluid.

Specific gravity- specific weight of fluid/specific weight of standard fluid

Viscosity- it is the property of fluid in which one layer opposes the other layer of fluid.

dynamic viscosity- it is the quantity Expression of fluid's resistance to flow(shear).

Kinematic viscosity- it is the ratio of the viscous force to interia force

Dynamic viscosity/density

Buyouncy- when an object is immersed in a liquid the opposite force is developed which is upward force & and pushes the object upward.

Bernoulli's equation-

P1+potential energy+ kinetic energy= P2+ potential energy + kinetic energy

Devices for fluid- manometer, mechanical gauges- diaphragm type, Bourdon's pressure gauge, bellow's type pressure gauge

Mach number- Velocity of object/Velocity of sound

Fluid flow- when liquid in the motion

Is know as fluid flow

Draft tube- it is the element of the runner or turbine

It is located at the upward of runner for the liquid to flow through it.

First law of thermodynamic- energy can neither be created or nor be destroyed it just can be converted in one form to another.

Second law- the heat always flow from hot body to cold body.

Third law- at absolute zero the entropy of perfectly crystalline substance is zero.

Entropy- it is the transformation

It is heat loss/ time

The entropy of the universe is changing.

Clarofic value of fuel- total amount of heat liberated when unit mass or unit volume of a fuel is completely burnt in presence of excess supply of oxygen

Boiler- it is used to convert water to steam or vapour

Economizer- it is type of device used for heat exchange it is also know as heat exchanger.

Superheater- it is used to increase the temperature of fluid above its saturation temperature.

Air preheater- these are waste recovery device in which air on its way to furnance is raised in temperature by help of flue gases.
Tubular preheater-
Plate Air preheater-

Boiler draught- it is the device in which the Exhaust or burnt gases are removed to atmosphere through chimney.

Scavnging- it is the process of removing Exhaust gases from the cylinder or burnt gases from cylinder.

Supercharging- in this process the air from the Atmosphere is taken and is been compressed by mixing of Air& fuel.

Turbocharging- inlet air compressor for an internal combustion engine(petrol or diesel)powered from the exhaust air.

Flywheel- it is a device in which the energy is stored and is supply when ever required is generally stored in power stroke.

Energy- the ability to do the work

Power- work done/time taken

Force- m.a

Velocity- displacement/time

Speed- distance/time

Appearance- the final look of product

Comfort- the design should be such that will be easier or comfort the customer.

Work done= force×displacement

Electrode- it is device through which the electricity enters or remove from the object.

Basic units-

1kilometer=1000meter

1hectometer=100meter

1deckameter=10meter

1decimeter=1/10meter

1centimeter=1/100meter

1millimeter=1/1000meter

Basic unit

Meter,Liter,gram

Distance,capacity,weight

1inch=25.4mm              1liter=1000ml

1inch=2.54cm                1day=24hour

1inch=0.0254m              1hour=60minute

1inch=2.54×10^-5           1minute=60second

1inch=0.0278yard

1yard=36inch

1foot=12inch

1tonne=1000kg

1pound=0.454kg

1kg=2.205pound

1tr=12000 BTU

The above are important terms & units which a mechanical engineer should know
Before going to interview.

Along this there are also lots of concept & terms which we will discuss further in another post. But the above are most important terms.
